Through the 1950s and 60s, an American synthetic fertilizer industry built itself into every gardening aisle in the country. By 1965 it was worth several billion dollars a year. By 2024, the global market had crossed $230 billion.

The last workshop in the world still hand-winding Vendée-tradition copper coils sits behind a 1942 craftsman house at the western edge of Asheville, North Carolina. The man at the workbench is Henri Brossard. He is 78. He is a retired toolmaker. He has been winding coils on the same 1921 walnut mandrel since the winter of 1998.

His grandfather, also named Henri, carried the mandrel across the Atlantic in a wooden trunk in 1923, along with a leather-bound notebook of pencil sketches from Georges Lakhovsky’s 1921 gardening lectures in Paris. 1. The Copper Feeds the Soil

Pure copper in damp earth slowly releases copper ions — the same micronutrient plants need for healthy leaves and disease resistance. Most American backyard soils are short on copper after decades of synthetic fertilizer. A Brossard stake quietly restores it in the root zone, the way the Bordeaux mixture has fed French vineyards since the 1880s.

2. The Coil Acts Like an Antenna

The air carries a faint natural electric charge — about 100 volts per meter from sky to ground. Plants respond to it. Lakhovsky saw in 1921 that a fine copper spiral mounted just above the soil concentrates that charge around the plant, the way a lightning rod concentrates a discharge. Modern atmospheric-electricity research at the University of Bristol has confirmed plants respond measurably to exactly this effect.

3. The Stake Wakes Up the Soil Life

32 Centimeters — Not a Random Length

“The imitations come in inches,” Henri says. “Twelve, eighteen, sometimes twenty-four. None of them are thirty-two centimeters, because none of them know that thirty to thirty-four is the window.” The 1921 notebook specifies the length to the millimeter. Outside that window, the antenna sits below the canopy or sticks up into the vertical growth. Either way, the harvest data shifts.

Three Structures — Not Just a Spiral

“Most of what you see at the hardware store is one flat spiral wound onto a straight rod,” Henri says. “That is not a Lakhovsky coil.” The 1921 notebook calls for three structures, each drawn on its own page: the flat double-spiral head, the tight ring-binding antenna directly below it, and the helix-wrap that descends along the stem to the soil line. The imitations skip the antenna-bind and the helix-stem because their manufacturers do not know what those elements are.

Wound on Walnut — Not Pressed in Steel

“A steel die presses the coil identically every time, and leaves the metal stressed in a specific way,” Henri says. “The wood does the opposite.” The walnut mandrel gives just slightly under the wire as the coil is wound. The copper sets relaxed, not tight. Two coils that look identical from a foot away behave completely differently in the soil. Henri’s kitchen-table notebook has the harvest numbers.

Hand-Wound — Not Machine-Identical

“Mine are not identical to each other,” Henri says. “Each one carries the micro-signature of my thumb — the pressure, the angle, the small hesitation before the last winding.” The Vendée market gardeners insisted on the hand-wind. They could tell by feel whether a coil had been wound by hand or pressed by a die. They believed only the hand-bound ones worked. Henri has weighed two decades of his own harvests and agrees.

A Burnished Interior — Not a Scratched One

“Run your fingernail down the inside of a hardware-store coil and you feel the scratches the steel mandrel left,” Henri says. The walnut does the opposite. As the copper is drawn against the grain, the wood burnishes the interior smooth, almost waxed. Antique-tool collectors recognize a walnut-polished coil at a glance because of this. Henri believes the soil recognizes it too.

The harvest results from Henri’s own beds are not the only ones now coming in. Why the Workshop Is Closing
