Edith's Handmade Seven Cats Rug β€” Home of Craft
🐈

Handmade in Putney, Vermont

Edith Pelletier, 72. French-Canadian rug maker from the Connecticut River Valley. Has been making rugs by hand since she was eight years old β€” the way her grandmother taught her. Available in two shapes β€” half-moon or rectangular. The workshop closes at the end of July. This is her final collection.

"I never sold a rug until I was sixty-eight. They were always just for the house, for the family, for friends. Now they have to go somewhere β€” and I'd like them to go to people who'll actually live with them."

β€” Edith Pelletier, Putney, VT

Why This Rug

Six Things You Won't Find on a Factory-Made Cat Rug

Every detail below comes out of sixty-four years of making rugs the way her grandmother first taught her in the summer of 1961. Nothing here is an accident.

β—Ž

Real Wool Pile β€” Not a Print

The seven cats are built fiber by fiber from real wool. The colors, whiskers, and expressions are in the wool itself β€” not heat-pressed on top of a flat synthetic mat. They won't peel, crack, or wash off, because there's nothing on the surface to come off.

🐈

Seven Hand-Stitched Cats

Each of the seven cats is individually stitched into the rug ground β€” plum, saffron, charcoal, black, white, mint, and orange. Every whisker stands up from the surface. You can feel each cat under your bare feet on a cold morning.

☐

Non-Slip Cotton-Poly Backing

A bonded cotton-poly underside keeps the rug planted on hardwood, tile, or laminate. No slipping. No curling at the corners after a week. No bunching at the doorway.

β—†

Generously Sized β€” Two Shapes

At 90 Γ— 60 cm (about 35 by 24 inches), the rug is sized for the places people actually live with one β€” an entryway, a kitchen, in front of a chair, beside the bed. Available in two shapes β€” half-moon or classic rectangle. Same size in both.

✦

Machine-Washable on Cool

Built for real life with cats and boots. The cotton-poly construction goes through a cool, gentle cycle when accidents happen β€” and they will. Lay flat to dry. No tumble drying. Comes out looking like the day it arrived.

β—Ž

Final Collection β€” Roughly 400 Remaining

Edith closes the workshop at the end of July. The 400 finished rugs on her shelves are the last that will ever come out of the Pelletier workshop. No reorders. No second runs.

β€” A Letter Edith Keeps in Her Cigar Box

"Dear Mrs. Pelletier β€” I lost my cat Mabel of seventeen years in February. I ordered your rug because the seven little cats on it looked like every cat I'd ever loved, all together at once. It sits in front of my bed now. My new cat, Toast, sleeps on it every single night. I think she knows. Thank you for making something that holds that much."

A longtime customer β€” one of dozens of handwritten letters Edith has kept in a cedar cigar box since 2021.

Five Things You Get With Every Seven Cats Rug

βœ“
Handmade in Putney, Vermont Each rug is made by Edith, start to finish, in the back room of her home in the Connecticut River Valley. Stitched, finished, and inspected by one pair of hands before it ships.
βœ“
Three Generations of Craft The technique came from Quebec in 1923 β€” Edith's grandmother Marguerite taught her the summer she turned eight. Sixty-four years later, every rug still goes the same way.
βœ“
Real Wool Cats β€” Not Printed The seven cats are stitched into the rug ground with real wool, fiber by fiber. The colors are in the wool. The whiskers stand up. Won't peel. Won't fade.
βœ“
Generously Sized β€” 90 Γ— 60 cm At 35 by 24 inches, the rug is sized for the places people actually use one β€” the front hallway, the kitchen floor, the landing in front of the fireplace, the floor beside the bed. Not a small doormat. Built to be lived on.
βœ“
Free Shipping + 30-Day Returns Free shipping on every order. Ready to ship in 1–2 days. If it doesn't feel right when it arrives, send it back within 30 days for a full refund. No questions, no forms.
βœ“

Edith's 30-Day Return Policy

Put it by your door. Let your cat sleep on it. Carry it from the entryway to the bedside and back. If it isn't what you imagined β€” send it back within 30 days for a full refund. No questions, no forms. Just an email to the shop.

A Note From the Workshop

Edith makes every rug by hand, one at a time, in the back room of her home in Putney, Vermont. Because each rug is made by hand, slight variations in color, the position of the cats, and the texture of the wool are a natural part of how each one comes out. These are not flaws. This is what handmade looks like.

To keep the rug at its best: machine wash on a cool, gentle cycle when needed. Lay flat to dry. Do not tumble dry. Treat it gently and it will outlast most of what you own.

Message from the Artist:

After years of making things by hand, our workshop is closing. These are the last pieces we'll ever ship. Every item on this page was made slowly, carefully, and with more love than any factory could replicate. Nothing rushed. Nothing outsourced. Just real craft from real hands.

We're proud of every single one. We hope they find good homes.

When they're gone, they're gone β€” and so are we.
