Handcrafted one piece at a time, this tin whirligig gives the breeze something to do. Each wheel turns on two sealed ball bearings instead of a rod rubbing in a hole, so the wheels roll freely and quietly the moment the air moves. A solid steel stake holds all 56 inches of it upright in the flower bed, right where you can see it from the kitchen window.
Choose your riders (all handcrafted)
🐸 Frogs on a Penny-Farthing
Two frogs, one in a top hat and one in a bonnet, perched high on a vintage high-wheel bicycle. Painted by hand in green with bright accents, dapper and a little absurd.
🐱 Cat & Mouse on a Motorcycle
An orange tabby with a determined grin at the handlebars and a grey passenger in a leather jacket holding on tight. Hand-painted in bright enamel colors that read from across the garden.
🦗 Praying Mantis on a Chopper
Two mantises on a low chopper-style motorcycle, long legs wrapped around the bars, hand-shaped tin bodies in fresh green and yellow. The most sculptural of the three, for the gardener who likes a surprise.
Whichever pair you choose, the hardware underneath is the same: two sealed ball bearings in every wheel, a hand-shaped tin body painted by hand, and a solid 5/16" steel stake.
What Makes It Different
Plenty of garden spinners turn on a plain metal rod pushed through a hole. It works at first. Then grit and rain get in, metal starts rubbing on metal, and the wheel needs a stronger gust to move, until one day it squeaks or just sits still in a breeze that should be turning it. This one rolls on sealed ball bearings instead, closed off from the dirt and water that wear an open joint down.
What's underneath the fun.
Sealed ball bearings: two in every wheel, so the wheels roll instead of drag
Solid 5/16" steel ground stake: included; push it in once and it stands upright
Shaped and painted by hand: tin shaped, soldered and painted by hand, one piece at a time
Balanced by hand: every wheel is balanced by hand
Real garden presence: 56" (142 cm) tall with the stake, a 16" (41 cm) front wheel, about 4 lb (1.8 kg)
Easy care: a wipe with a damp cloth now and then

A note from the owner
Why I chose this whirligig.
A garden comes alive when something in it moves. The trouble is that plenty of spinners stall, squeak or lean after one windy afternoon. I wanted one that was built properly and had some personality, something worth watching from the kitchen window.
Each of these is handcrafted one piece at a time. The tin is shaped by hand, the joints are soldered, the riders are painted by hand, and every wheel is balanced by hand. The wheels turn on sealed ball bearings, two in each, and the whole piece stands on a solid steel stake.
Painting by hand is why your frogs, cat and mouse, or mantises have faces with a little character, and why no two are quite the same. You'll have named them within a week.
"Shaped and painted by hand. Set spinning by the breeze."
